Weight Gain Disorders

If you start to gain weight, you might be thinking that you maybe eating too much and not exercising enough.  That is what most people think, but actually you may have a medical condition and not be aware if it.  Even though the scale does not lie and pounds are creeping up, there maybe reasons that are not entirely your fault.

7 to 10 percent of pre-menopausal women, gain an extra 30 pounds and may not realize that they could have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome also known as PCOS.  PCOS can be misdiagnosed for years because a women maybe reflecting other symptoms of menopause.  When this happens the ovaries for no apparent reason, pump out too much male hormones.

Typically, when we gain a significant amount of weight at any time in our lives, we should go see a doctor and have every test imaginable done because so many times, disorders and diseases can be overlooked.  I would also recommend getting a second opinion, if your doctor believes that there is nothing wrong.  It is common that you may be experiencing other symptoms as well, during puberty or sometimes post pregnancy.

In addition look out for symptoms, such as excess facial hair, irregular periods, thinning hair and severe acne.  These are all symptoms of excessive male hormones.  However, studies have shown, that the excessive male hormones are not what causes weight gain.  Genes are another component that has been linked to PCOS, but nothing has been proven ad results are not clear.  While one person maybe diagnosed with PCOS and had family member with weight problems there maybe another person with no family history of weight problems.

What is clear is that culture plays a significant part because people in America compared to Europe may feel more social pressure to being skinny.  Women with the disorder can lose weight with the right treatment.  On average most women on a supervised diet and exercise program, lose over 10 percent of body weight.  When the pounds drop, male hormone levels drop and provide room for change and improvements.
